# Managing and Applying Tags

Apply custom tags to your images, further enriching and organizing your data.

## What are Tags?

Tags differ from Labels in a few key ways, laid out in the [Structures/Terminology section](/getting-started/structure-concepts-and-terminology.md). The main thing to know is that Tags are completely user generated (i.e. they are *not* predicted by ML models) and they apply to a whole *Image* instead of an *Object* in an Image.

Tags are entirely customizable and can be used for a whole host of use cases: to mark “favorite” pictures, interesting behavior, or anything else they are looking to collect data on.&#x20;

Before you can apply a Tag to an image, you need to add it your list of allowable project Tags. &#x20;

## Adding new Tags

Before you can apply a Tag to an image, you need to add it your list of allowable project Tags. &#x20;

**To add a new Tag:**

1. Click the “Manage labels and tags” button in the left sidebar
2. Click Tags
3. Click the “New Tag” button
4. Enter the name for the new tag, select the desire color, and click Save.

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRXnLa4ZLo4&list=PLSprRV1-SBDc&index=21>" %}

That Tag is now available for all project members to use and apply. If you want to edit an existing tag, navigate to the same area, but click the pencil icon on the Tag.

## Applying Tags to Images

There are multiple ways to apply a Tag to an image. The first, and simplest, is to apply it to one picture at a time.

**To apply a Tag to one image:**

1. Look at any image in the expanded view
2. Click the "+ Tag" button underneath the image
3. Select the desired Tag

You can also apply Tags to multiple images at once, in a similar way to how you validate or edit Labels for multiple images at once.

**To apply Tags to multiple images at once:**

1. Select multiple images by holding the Shift key and clicking any two images. Doing this will automatically select all images between the two you clicked on.
2. Once you select multiple images, right click to bring up the menu of actions.&#x20;
3. Click “Apply tag”
4. Type your tag or click the down caret to show the list of options.
5. Click your desired tag. It will apply to all images selected!

**Editing or Deleting Tags from images**

Removing a Tag from an image is very simple. Just click the "X" next to it underneath the image.

## Editing / Deleting Tags from your Project

Editing or Deleting a Tag from the list of your Project Tags is slightly different, but just as simple.

**To edit an allowable Tag:**

1. Click the “Manage labels and tags” button in the left sidebar
2. Click Tags
3. Click the pencil icon next to your desired tag
4. Edit what you’d like and click Save.

**Deleting an allowable Tag:**

Before deleting a Tag, know that this will:

* Remove it as an option to apply to your images, and
* Remove all instances of it from your existing images

**To delete an allowable Tag:**

1. Click the “Manage labels and tags” button in the left sidebar
2. Click Tags
3. Click the trashcan icon next to your desired tag
4. Type “permanently delete” in the text field, and click “Yes, Delete” button
